There are an impossible number of self-help books, website, podcasts, and other material out there. And they all have varying messages.
Some might say to not listen to the “haters” in life. Others encourage you to find your “true self.” And it’s not unheard of to hear: “Just believe in yourself!”
It would be easy to brush that off as self-help boilerplate.
Yet, what if there was something more to that saying than you realized? What if the key to success in life was simply believing in yourself?
That belief could mean all the difference between making good or bad decisions in your life.
The Key to Success: Believe!
Steve Jobs was known as an innovator who revolutionized both technology and how we use it. However, he also had a spiritual side to him.
He’s quoted as saying: “You have to trust in something—your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”
Jobs knew that the key to success for him was having the belief that it was possible for him to succeed. While he didn’t know what exactly would be the path to success, he at least started with this belief. And that, in turn, helped him to make choices in his life that ultimately led him to success.
Why So Many Struggle
Society today is filled with examples of people who are struggling. Whether it’s in relationships, their careers, or in other areas of their life. It seems to be impossible for them to find any kind of success. Or they have found some success, but know that they could be greater.
What is holding them back?
One reason might be is that they don’t hold the internal belief that they are capable of doing great things. They “settle” or are willing to accept less because of that belief. Why?
It could be due to early experiences from childhood that reinforced a message that they were not capable. That, no matter what they did, they would fail. How heartbreaking is that?
Yet, this isn’t the only reason why so many don’t reach their full potential.
Not Having a Goal
Everyone needs something to strive for. A goal helps to put things into focus. Especially if it comes from a profound desire emanating from within yourself.
For example, let’s say you want to become a better piano player. So you make that a goal. Yet, it’s all too easy to let that goal slip away. And, as a result, you never achieve your goal. That, in turn, has a big impact on how you perceive yourself. Which, then, affects your ability for making good decisions in the future.
Hence, another critical key to success is not just having a goal, but knowing how to best implement that goal.
A Willingness to Try
Sometimes people struggle with simply having the courage to try. They hesitate, thinking that they don’t have the ability or skill to make things happen. Yet that’s not true!
Of course, if you want to be a world-class athlete that means you haven’t arrived at that level of competition. However, every successful athlete had that first moment when they were willing to step up and try. For instance, attending their first practice or participating in their first event.
If you’re not willing to try, how will you ever find success?
How Therapy Can Help You Believe
Just because you haven’t yet found success in life, doesn’t mean that you won’t. You just need some help.
Therapy can be a powerful support and a key to success. By working with a therapist, you will have someone who can identify your patterns of thinking with you. And, in turn, they will be able to help you change that thinking and find a different perspective.
